It's all well and good having a drink in the countryside, but what happens
when you're in the big smoke and you've got a bit of a thirst on?
Many thanks go out to our friend Paul, purveyor of quality reggae, funk and soul
music- resident retailer at Payback Records, St Nicholas Market, Bristol-
who gives us a great look-in review of his favourite Bristol boozers! |
Scroll down for Payback Paul's Vinyl recommendations!
The Ship, Redcliffe
I've been going here for many years, in fact I should have my own tankard by
now. The Ship reminds me of someone's living room, quite often, everyone
sits around and watches Eastenders. Bizarrely, the pub's very popular with
the supporters of West Ham United Football Club, not a bad thing but I'm
Rovers through and through so I keeps me mouth shut! I play darts regularly
here with my good friend Frizz a.k.a JJ. And he's rather keen on the tap
ciders available. Bargain prices, the Ship is cheap and cheerful and the
Sunday roast is recommended. The annex out the back adds a certain
Mediterranean charm and all that! - 7/10
Cotham Porter Stores, Cotham
Proper business this one, I go here with my old mate Oxfam Alex, who lives
just round the corner. Dank, grim, foreboding with an iffy clientele - I
absolutely loves it. Everywhere you look, cider causalities left, right and
centre - not my tipple but there's always some great ales available. Oxfam
Alex recently told me that the place had changed hands and improvements are
underway. Not too many I hope, although the toilets could do with a serious
overhaul. Full of character and very friendly to boot. The days of people
stepping over dead cider corpses are long gone. The more eagle eyed of you
may spot Old Fu Man Chu, who drives the No75 bus up to Filton, that's a bit
worrying but never mind. - 7/10
New Found Out, Totterdown
Less fashionable than the Shakespeare down the road but all the better for
it. All you could want from an end of the road boozer and much more. I took
the wife here on our first date and wooed her with Stella and dominoes and
she's been putty in my hand ever since. Painted pink inside and out, with an
imposing yet friendly landlady, the NFO boasts a lively mix of local rough
necks and Totterdown arties. No quiz to my knowledge but the curry nights
are well worth a visit. Once again, bar prices are very reasonable. My mate
Thinhead did many an 'alldayer' and always said the Kronie was well kept!
Pool table, dartboard, small garden available, definitely worth a visit. On
a good night the pub rocks. - 8/10
The Imp, Alpha Rd, Southville
A friendly local pub, situated at the top of Dean Lane, Southville. Tucked
out of the way, me and the missus found his hostelry after an argument one
night. Pub quizzers should take note, the Imp boasts the best quiz in
Bristol every Thursday. The quizmaster has a broader Bristolian accent than
our Dad. Sometimes subtitles are needed as he gets steadily pissed as the
evening goes on. The range of beers isn't extensive but the bar prices are
very fair indeed. The missus enjoys a ginger wine, which costs a miserly £1.
Saturday night is cabaret night and my mate Scope Pete swears he's seen a
blind Elvis impersonator playing the Hammond organ - what more do you want'
- 9/10
The Albion, Cumberland Basin way
Ran by the same landlord as the Orchard, just down the road. The Albion has
a real Scooter boy/Mod following. I went here recently to see my mate Gaz's
Ska band and bloody good it was too. Quite sparsely decorated with a limited
bar stock. It is however, reasonably priced and the landlord's a decent
sort. You always get a good mixture of local, colourful characters. My
favourite being the bloke who dresses like the Hofmeister bear, who Ska
dances and plays the Fruity simultaneously. Worth a mention and a visit as
there's always good live music and DJ's appearing. - 7/10
PAYBACK PAUL'S CURRENT VINYL RECOMMENDATIONS
1, Kingston Town - Alborosie (Forward) Killer roots tune,in the Jamrock vein,by Italian dread Alborosie.Currently reggae's hottest producer
2, Ghetto Life - Pressure (Don Corleon) On Sly n Robbie's Baltimore riddim.Sounding like the legendary Tenor Saw,Pressure will be huge in 2008.
3, Hold It Down - Pam Hall (Joe Frasier) On the Stars/Full Attention riddim.A great lovers track that rivals anything from the golden era of the 60s/70s.
4, No Sandweed - YT (sativa) A real gem.Ipswich MC Yt laments the lack of decent puff over a cool rocksteady beat.
5 Blind To You - Collie Buddz (pre) Collie Buddz fourth single and much hard hitting than the earlier efforts, huge in Jamaica and most of Europe aswell
